How to Measure Goalie Glove Palm Size for Kids

Aug 2, 2022

Choosing the right size of soccer goalie gloves for kids is child's play - or so you'd think. Although it's not rocket science to get glove size right, many soccer moms and dads still have trouble finding the best-fitting gloves for their kids. This post will examine how parents can measure their kid's hand size appropriately and how to choose gloves that match their kids' hands.

How to Measure Palm/Hand Size

Measuring the size of soccer goalie gloves is pretty straightforward. All you need to start is a measuring tape.

  1. To start, use your tape measure to find the circumference of the widest part of your kid's hands. That will typically mean measuring below where your pinky ends and above your thumb. Find this measurement in inches. At this point, you don't want to include the size of their fingers just yet.
  2. Round the number up to the closest whole inch.
  3. Add 1 inch to the rounded measurement. That will be the size of your kid's soccer goalie gloves.

Here's what this looks like in real life. If your child has a measurement of 7.80 inches, you would round it up to 8 inches. To finalize your goalie size, add 1 inch to the rounded number. So, in this case, you would add 1 inch to the 8-inch measurement. Your child's goalie glove size would be a "9".

You can measure the vertical length of your kid's hand as well.

  1. Measure their hands from the middle finger's tip to the palm's base.
  2. Note this measurement. Add ¼ -½ inch to the measurement so there is added room in the glove if necessary.
  3. Refer to a soccer goalie glove chart.

You can find a more accurate fit with both width and circumference.

Now, if you're not too fond of measuring your kid's hands, you can rely on a general goalie glove chart based on age and height. Remember, though, that they don't apply to every player of a certain age or height.

Both kids and adults don't neatly fall into these height requirements. They can easily stand shorter or taller than average, so this chart may or may not apply to your child.

Importance of Choosing the Right Size

Getting the right goalie glove size shouldn't be a guessing game. The right fit helps young goalkeepers make better ball contact, and the comfort of a good fit eliminates distraction. If soccer goalie gloves are too tight, they squeeze the hand and cause discomfort. Also, the excessive tightness can wear down the material and cause the gloves to break down or split.

If the gloves are too loose, keepers will have poor grip on the ball, and their performance may suffer. The ideal fit is between slightly loose and snug. Also, remember that specific goalie glove cuts have different designs that purposefully provide more or less space to suit your child's taste and experience.
